External links (to other websites)

An external link directs visitors to another website.

For example you may want to have some text that links to someone else's website that makes reference to yours. Adding an external link is almost identical to adding an internal one, except that it is good practice to link external links to a separate browser window. See below.

1. Highlight the text and click the 'Insert/Edit Link' icon

With your Word Processor content block selected, select the text that you want to make into a link and click the 'Insert/Edit Link' icon, located in the Word Processor's toolbar.

2. Enter the URL (address) of the other website where you would like to link

The Link pop up window appears on top of the work space. Type the URL (the address) of the website you will be linking that text to.

Since you are linking to a different website, it is good practice to have the other website open in a separate browser window or tab. This way if people click on the link your website will remain open. So click the 'Target' tab. Select 'New Window (_blank)' from the pull-down list. Alternatively, you may select '<popup Lightbox window>'. When a link set to use that target is clicked, the destination page will seem to "hover" above the website.

Click the 'OK' button.

3. Don't forget to Save the changes
you've made to the content block!

The highlighted text is now underlined in the Word Processor, indicating it is linked. Unless you are making other changes to that content block, you may now click the 'Save' button to save your changes and close this content block for editing.

Previewing the page

IMPORTANT: when you're editing content in the Word Processor, it will not look exactly like it does in the actual page. That's because many design settings cannot be applied to text when you're editing it in the Word Processor. To see the real page with all its design settings applied to it, preview it.

In this example, when visitors to your website click on that link a separate browser tab will open, and load the URL you've specified there.
